Recently I was fortunate enough to be asked to go talk to Ms. Paula Poorani of Sugarfoot Café and Catering in Wilmington Delaware. For those who might unfortunately live far enough away to not know who or what Sugarfoot is, allow me to enlighten you.
10 years ago before the concept of organic foods was as widespread as it is today Ms. Poorani and her business partner Anne Day, began Sugarfoot as a gourmet catering service and café. Today there are two café locations in Wilmington, both uptown and down, and it has become the most popular catering service in Delaware.

A Sugarfoot Wedding
A quick glance at their photo gallery can tell you why Sugarfoot is so popular. Their food has a reputation for not only being top notch but also for the beautiful and quirky presentation. Ms. Poorani and her partner are still very hands on with their business and strive to have their own personalities be represented by their food choices and presentation. She explained that their goal is to make sure their customers discover fun surprises with the presentation of their food as well as great flavor.

I was able to sample some of their food from their uptown location and can personally vouche for the flavor. Ms. Poorani could not have been nicer to this young blogger and made sure I left with a bonus chocolate chip cookie in addition to the delicious quiche I already had my eye on.
I had a great time talking about food and life in general with Ms. Poorani and I suspect that's the way most people feel after speaking with her. Her website for Sugarfoot has many more photos than I have here, but hopefully if you haven't already heard of them you'll click on the link and take a closer look. Sugarfoot’s photos and fluffy winged bunny mascot show that although they are serious about making great food they don’t take themselves too seriously at all:)

This post is going to be about one of those magical things you find by accident on the internet one day. When you think you’re just looking for the weather but what you actually really want is amazing cake pictures.
And then you find this.

So now of course you want to immediately be Facebook friends with whoever made it so that you can have pictures like this to look at every day.

(Close up of the flower detail on the dress cake)
Well it turns out that Anne Heap who owns and runs Pink Cake Box of New Jersey, made the cake and I wasn’t the only one who realized what a crazy good job she and her team did. Their cake was for the “Let Them Eat Cake” contest for the Somerset Art Association and is titled “Bloom of the Ball”.
They of course won the “Showstopper Award” and I won’t attempt to write more about it here because they will describe it all more accurately on their own blog at Pink Cake Box where they also have pictures of the cakes from their Food Network Challenges.
The site is definitely worth checking out for all of their amazing cakes and who knows maybe one day both our sites will even be friends on Facebook.

Lisa tried out another recipe this week and it turned out great. I have a sneaking suspicion that most things she bakes turn out great but don’t let that keep you from trying if you don’t share a similar track record.
She got a recipe for “Grandma Orbaker’s Favorite Cherry Cobbler” and some ingredients from Trader Joe’s, and took some awesome pictures along the way.
She stayed pretty true to the recipe except for the almonds. She didn’t have any handy so her cobbler was almond free.
Ingredients
½ cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 cup self-rising flour
2 tablespoons butter
¼ cup sliced almonds
¼ tsp. almond extract
4 cups pitted, red tart cherries (1 quart fresh cherries = 4 cups pitted cherries)
Preheat oven to 350º in 9” oven-proof dish, melt butter in oven.
Blend well flour, 2/3 cup sugar, milk, and almond extract. Remove pan from oven; add batter and spread to smooth. Top with cherries and sprinkle with remaining 1/3 cup sugar so that it looks like this in this middle stage.

A few weeks ago PUFF (Pick Up Fine Food) closed its location in Mendenhall, PA and moved a few miles up the road to Greenville, Delaware. This has been a cause for great celebration to Greenville residents and rightly so although denizens of Mendenhall are probably feeling a little lost.
To help explain why people around here are so excited it helps to know that PUFF has been in business for almost 30 years making gourmet food to go. In 2003 husband and wife Peter and Sydney Lickle Jordan, bought the business from Sydney’s aunt and moved to Mendenhall PA.
PUFF specializes in making gourmet entrees, hors d’oeuvres, and custom cakes and cupcakes to go. They offer a wide range of healthy food options, but also include the staples that made them the favorite of so many. Their Shepherd’s Pie is apparently a long time favorite. They also offer a catering service for small dinners to large parties.
Mrs. Jordan was kind enough to take time out of her busy day to talk with me a few weeks ago right after the opening and it was nice to see her chat with her customers like they were old friends. She said that her favorite part of her job is getting to talk to her very loyal customers everyday, and it’s pretty obvious that her customers feel the same way. It seemed that every person that came in while I was there was on a first name basis with both the Jordans.
I also purchased a tray of raspberry brie in phyllo dough after our interview that I will definitely be purchasing again. All I had to do was bake it for a few minutes, and then devour it. Just as a tip it went perfectly with Domain Chandon’s sparkling brut rose.
But also not to be forgotten are PUFF’s gourmet cakes. They offer an array of choices on their website, and they were kind enough to lend me a few samples to show you here.

A wedding cake topped with fresh roses.

A custom made flip-flop cake.
The store is great if you just need to pick something up if you don’t feel like cooking for a night, and its also great if you want to plan an elaborate dinner or party. If you’re local stop in and give Mr. Jordan’s award winning crab cakes a try, and if you hail from Mendenhall it’s definitely worth the drive!
